Barwon Local Area Command consists of 15 townships. Moree situated on the North West Slopes and Plains, 125kms south of the Queensland border is the largest in the Command and houses the Barwon LAC Office. The population of Moree is approximately 9,500 and the Police Station operates on a 24 hours basis. Narrabri situated 100km south of Moree, with a population of 7,200 is next largest town within the LAC and operates on a 16 hour basis.
Boggabilla and Mungindi are border towns to our neighbouring state of Queensland and are five and four unit Stations respectively. Wee Waa is situated 32kms east of Narrabri and is a six unit station.
The remainder of the stations are either single or two unit stations, these being Bellata, Bingara, Boggabri, Boomi, Garah, Gravesend, Gwabegar, Pallamallawa, Pilliga and Warialda.
Boggabilla, Boomi, Gwabegar, Mungindi, Pilliga and Wee Waa Police Stations are all classed as Special Remote.
The predominant industry within Barwon LAC is agriculture, with much of the district’s wealth produced as a result of cotton farming. As a result of the cotton industry the Command sees an influx of itinerant workers each year affecting the majority of townships within the Command.
Hot Mineral Baths are located within Moree and are valued for the therapeutic value of the natural artesian mineral water. This facility brings to the Command various members of European communities.
Prior to the 1830’s the Moree District was the province of the Kamilaroi Aboriginal tribe whose culture remains an integral part of today’s society of 15 township.
